There is a reason Red Hook keeps appearing in this project.
It appeared in the founder's twelve years of New York life. It appeared in the site analysis as the location of No Stone Tombstone — the first active layer of the Sim Eternal City New York scenario. And it appears here, as the fifth and final candidate site, carrying the most powerful narrative weight of any location on this list.
Red Hook was Sandy's most photographed wound. The low-income elderly and immigrant residents of this neighborhood — people who had built lives of extraordinary resilience in one of Brooklyn's most historically overlooked communities — became the face of what urban climate vulnerability looks like when it arrives without warning and without preparation. Their flooded homes, their darkened towers, their inability to evacuate became a global image. And then, as cities do, New York moved on.
Red Hook did not fully move on. The residents who stayed remember. The water remembers.
The Red Hook Basin Outer Anchorage sits at the southwestern edge of Brooklyn's waterfront. The existing NYC Ferry terminal at Red Hook offers immediate transit connectivity to Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, and the wider ferry system — making this the most transit-accessible of the five candidate sites. NYU Langone Brooklyn and Maimonides Medical Center serve the area. The basin's protected character makes the four-vessel configuration operationally stable.
But none of those qualities are why Red Hook matters most.
Red Hook matters because the story of Sim Eternal City — a city built for the people the water displaced, run by those people, anchored on the water itself — has no more honest location in New York than here. Siting the floating city at the outer edge of Red Hook Basin does not erase what Sandy did. It transforms the geography of that wound into the geography of what comes after. The water that took their homes becomes the ground of their new beginning.
That is not symbolism. That is the entire premise of this project made visible.

On April 18, 2026, the first Sim Eternal City site in New York will be announced.
